The Scarecrow

Squeeks,creaks,thumps,and bumps throughout the night
I live again through another terrible fright
It started on Halloween there were knockings at my door
Outside a storm of lightening, thunder, and winds that roar

My black cat meowing, hissing, and arching his back
Behind the door I surely heard someone cough and hack
Flashes of lightening and shadows grazed the walls
Sounds were heard throughout the halls

The candle inside my Jack-O-Lantern flicked its flame
Inside my home I heard someone walking as if lame
The house groaned and moaned as if dying
As I tell you this story remember that I'm not lying

I sat at the window and looked out in the field
I swear that the old scarecrow was holding a shield
The yellow moon made the dark night seem dim
Lightening was striking all around him

A lightening bolt sticking out from his hand
He was fighting off the crows in large bands
A terrible battle of war was waged
The winner of birds and straw who can gauge

The next morning the scarecrow was no longer there
He had been blown away during the night his spot was bare
I know I had saw with my own eyes last night
That scarecrow gave his life in the greatest of fights

Don't know if there a place for scarecrows when they die
If anyone deserves to be in heaven it should be him, oh my
I'll never forget that scarecrow that lived on that stick
By God you couldn't call him a country hick

A warrior true to his calling battling his foes
On a halloween night so very long ago
The end of his life happen that night
Making me realize how quickly we die, that is the fright
